Family holidays, not truancy keeps students out of school, says principal
While celebrating the drop in truancy figures in Devon, Sidmouth College principal Jeremy Roberts says taking students out of school for family holidays during term time is the problem.
He told the Sidmouth Herald: “So many people earn a living in trades and businesses connected with the holiday trade some families have little option other than during term time to take a holiday.”
And as Cllr John Smith, Devon County Council’s deputy leader and executive councillor for children’s services said: “If children are not in school then we cannot teach them and they cannot enhance their chances of having a fulfilling life.”
