Devon County Council bets £50,000 on Plymouth World Cup bid

Devon County Council has proposed £50,000 towards the Plymouth bid to host world cup games if the England is to host the World Cup in 2018.

The Plymouth venue is in competition with Bristol to become one of the World Cup venues.

Council leader John Hart said: “Our financial backing of up to £50,000 is comparatively modest and is dependent on a thorough and workable business plan and all the other partners making similar or greater contributions.” And it could generate returns of up to £150 million for the county.

He told the Devon Week: “But even if our bid does not succeed then I believe it will have been money well spent in re-emphasising our Westcountry brand to the rest of the country and internationally.”
