Newton Abbot has Real Nappy Roadshow waddling into town – plus you can win £50!

After the real nappy raincheck in Newton Abbot, there’s still chance to get your hands on a £50 voucher as the Real Nappy Roadshow goes waddling into town

The Real Nappy Roadshow aims to encourage more people to give real nappies a go – saving money on their disposable counterparts and helping keep more nappies from landfill.  It takes place on Wednesday, November 18, and Teignbridge staff will be on hand from 9.30am – 3pm in Courtenay Street, offering practical advice and tips on reusable nappies; as well as the chance for parents to take a four week free trial of real nappies by borrowing one of the council’s 12 real nappy kits.  Anyone borrowing a kit between now and Christmas will also be entered in to a draw to win a £50 voucher to spend on real nappies.

Since starting the scheme in April 2008, 68 sets of parents have borrowed real nappy kits, with 70% going on to make a full time change to real nappies.  Kits are available in various sizes, and contain everything you need, including instructions and accessories.  A £25 deposit is required, and is refunded on safe return of the kit.  At the end of the trial parents receive a 20% off voucher to spend on real nappies (up to the value of £300) or they can buy the kit at a discounted rate (subject to availability).

In Devon a disposable nappy is thrown away every 1.1 seconds, resulting in over 28 million nappies in landfills across the county.  These nappies take hundreds of years to decompose, so a move towards using reusable nappies in the district would represent a significant step forward in helping the environment.  Past research shows parents can save at least £500 per child (including laundry costs) by using real nappies.
