South Devon MP backs campaign to keep cheques

Despite the fact that nearly four million cheques are written every day, the Payments Council, which represents the major banks, will vote this month on whether to carry out plans to scrap cheques.

Backing a campaign to save the cheque is Teign MP Richard Younger-Ross who has signed an early day motion, urging the banks to reconsider their proposals.

Richard told the Devon Week: “Many people still use this method of payment and plans to get rid of cheques will severely affect small and medium sized businesses, rural communities and the more elderly.”

I notice that all the people wanting to abolish cheques are from the banking industry. Why not ask consumers what they want? We use cheques to send money to family and to send and collect subscriptions to local small organisations etc. Most branches in London except Dulwich are an absolute disgrace. Bankers have taken all our money now they want to withdraw the few services they still offer!
