Better planning need for icy weather conditions, says MP

Pedestrians out and about in Teignbridge earlier this morning could be forgiven for thinking they had walked on to the film set of ‘Shaun of the Dead’ as people took to the streets in a zombie like fashion.

While cars manoeuvred very slowly along the main roads and skidded on the side turnings, pedestrians were faced with pavements of sheer ice.  It meant that everyone was forced to walk at a snails pace, hanging onto railings where they could or even risking life and limb by taking to the roads where the ice has turned to slush.

Commenting on the conditions, Teign MP Richard Younger-Ross said: “Of course this is unusual weather and local authorities don’t have the ability to grit all the roads. However, if rock salt bins were filled prior to a cold spell it would allow the local communities to deal with the dangerous icy patches.

“I have contacted Devon County Council and the Transport Minister to find out whether or not this has been considered and if so how such a scheme can be implemented.”

It is a disgrace. The weather has been cold since at least last Friday 18 Dec and in all this time (today is 23 December) I have not seen a single gritting lorry on the streets. Tried to walk into town today and gave up. Pavements like glass, roads a complete skating rink. Grit bins nearly empty… Council tax????
