North Devon MP welcomes ‘first steps towards fairer funding for schools’
Nick Harvey MP has welcomed an announcement today of extra money for the country’s poorest-funded schools.
Schools Minister David Laws has announced that £350million would be made available for local authorities including Devon to address the historic underfunding of schools in these areas.
Devon, currently the 6th lowest-funded authority in the country, will receive a boost of £16.2million – an increase of almost £200 per pupil.
Today’s announcement also sees the publication of a consultation document on a new national formula to make the allocation system fairer in the long-term.
Nick said: “I warmly welcome today’s announcement of funding for schools in the least fairly funded authorities in the country. I have been campaigning for over 20 years for a fairer funding formula that reflects the unique needs of pupils and schools, rather than relying on historic levels of spending which have significantly disadvantaged areas like North Devon.
“This issue has been too long kicked into the long grass by successive governments, so I’m delighted that this coalition government has taken action to address this imbalance.
“This money is a brilliant first step – but it’s still vital that we see a new national formula that locks in fairness. Whatever the political colour of the next government, a future formula must at least include today’s allocations as basic recognition of the unfairness schools in areas like North Devon have endured.
“Our schools have suffered too long and I’m sure they will be pleased by today’s news and the publication of a consultation, so they can make their voices heard. But this is the first stop on the long road to fairness, and I will continue to fight for North Devon’s schools to receive the funding they deserve.”
