North Devon MP praises North Devon tourist industry
MP Nick Harvey has paid a visit to one of North Devon’s top tourist businesses as part of English Tourism Week 2015.
Ilfracombe’s Hele Valley Holiday Park has recently celebrated an overall win in the prestigious Devon Tourism Awards as Camping and Caravanning Park of the Year. Its owners, David and Sandra Dovey, took Nick on a tour around the site and spoke to him about some of the challenges facing tourist businesses in North Devon.
The holiday park, which has been in the family for over 40 years, accommodates up to 1,800 people throughout its chalets, cottages and campsite.
Nick Harvey MP said: “It was a pleasure to meet Sandra and David during Tourism Week 2015. Their efforts have made Hele Valley a really delightful spot for holidaymakers. The chalets are of a superior quality and it’s clear that the couple’s hard work is thoroughly deserving of their recent accolade. The park is uniquely quiet and sheltered, making it perfect for families looking to get away from it all.
“Hele Valley is just one of many fantastic destinations in North Devon and we should be proud of the thriving tourist industry here. Earlier this week I spoke in a Parliamentary debate calling on the Government to cut VAT from 20% to 5% for tourist businesses: a boost of this sort would give us an extra competitive edge over cheaper European package holidays.
“The rollout of superfast broadband cannot come quickly enough to businesses like Hele Valley. The Doveys currently struggle to get fast enough speeds and with many families staying, many of whom will be using tablets and other devices, better connectivity is a huge priority. Getting superfast speeds to the so-called ‘final 10%’ of hard-to-reach homes and businesses is essential – we cannot have growing businesses like Hele Valley left behind and this is something I will continue to press the Government on.”
