Topping Out ceremony celebrates SAILS development at Dartmouth
The sun came out and the wind dropped to celebrate the “topping out” ceremony at the SAILS development in Dartmouth.
The tradition of topping can be traced to the ancient Scandinavian religious rite of placing a tree atop a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits displaced in its construction. Migrating initially to England and Northern Europe it then extended to the Americas.
Mayor of Dartmouth, Cllr Rob Lyon said: “I remember the development being presented at the planning meeting.
“The design instantly struck me as something fresh and relevant. I could imagine coming across on the higher ferry and being able to instantly pinpoint this incredible building on the skyline, as the entrance to our town. I wish we could see more of this style of building along the Esplanade.”
Although not yet completed, the scheme – designed by an award winning AR Designs and ALA Architects – has already been credited with its own 5 star award for Best Apartment at this year’s highly respected UK Property Awards.
The striking contemporary design, inspired by an ocean-going clipper, adds a dramatic new landmark building in a central location to the otherwise medieval and Elizabethan architecture of Dartmouth.
With only 6 apartments in total, SAILS offers sizeable, light and airy homes with stunning views of the harbour, Coronation Park and the Royal Naval College.
The highly dramatic penthouse occupies the whole of the top floor with a sizeable balcony overlooking the harbour as well as a Japanese roof garden to the rear, incorporating its own “alfresco dining area.” The garden will include built in seating as well as an outdoor kitchen which must make it one of the most exceptional apartments in Dartmouth!
SAILS is a joint venture between Howard Tenens Distribution and Environ Communities Ltd.
Tony Dowse, chairman of Environ said: “We wanted to do something special with the site as the location is incredible. SAILS is unique in the area with its striking design and contemporary minimalist interiors that maximise on the views.”
With prices between £685,000 and £1,500,000 the apartments at SAILS will be finished at the end of June, ready for applicants to settle in just in time for a prime waterfront view at this year’s Dartmouth Regatta!
