Nature events galore at Sharpham Trust for May Bank Holiday weekend and beyond
There’s a host of nature-based events taking place on the beautiful Sharpham Estate in South Devon for the May Day Bank Holiday weekend and beyond.
From camping in the woods and foraging for wild food, to hearing the Dawn Chorus or going for a canoe paddle adventures on the nearby River Dart – there’s something to do in nature for adults, children and families next month.
The Sharpham Trust, which is staging these activities, is a charity that encourages a deeper connection with nature. The Trust promotes mindfulness, well-being and sustainable living through its activities, which also include mindfulness retreats and courses.
The events planned for May include:
Wildlife Weekend, Saturday and Sunday May 2 & 3 –
events in nature, including Nature’s Bounty, Overnight Camp, Birds & Breakfast and Family Canoe Paddle Adventure.
Nature’s Bounty, Saturday May 2 –
Identifying and foraging for foods and medicines in the Spring harvest. Try your hand at seasonal wild salads, and learn numerous edible, medicinal and creative recipes. You will end the day with food to take home and knowledge to last a lifetime of these wonderful seasonal plants. Bring water, clothing and footwear appropriate for the time of year, notepad, pencil and a jam jar. Meet at Sharpham House car park.
Overnight Camp, Saturday to Sunday May 2-3 –
Join us for an overnight camp in the wonderful Sharpham Quarry campsite area. The camp is part of our Wildlife Weekend and is ideal if you want to get up early the next day for our Birds and Breakfast at dawn event with Mike Langman, or take part in Nature’s Bounty or our Family Canoe Adventure.
Birds & Breakfast – International Dawn Chorus Day, Sunday May 3 –
Our annual morning Dawn Chorus walk across Sharpham, which starts at 5.30am. With local bird expert and renowned bird illustrator Mike Langman, we will try to identify birdsong and pick up a few tricks for remembering them along the way! We will see if we can spot the resident kingfisher and grey heron fishing in the Sharpham lake and will finish in the quarry for a hearty breakfast around an open fire at 9.30am. Meet at Sharpham Car Park.
Family Canoe Paddle Adventure, Sundays May 3 & 17 –
Explore The Dart Estuary from Sharpham in an open canoe – a great way to get close to wildlife and access places that you can only get to via the water. Our instructors are all very experienced and highly qualified, so you’ll have an experience to remember. Meet at Sharpham House. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Spring Nature Connection Day, Saturday May 16 –
Join us for a Nature Connection Day on the beautiful Sharpham Estate and let nature be your guide to your own emotional wellbeing.
Reconnect with yourself by being in nature, with solo and group activities that will help heal a soul sick with stress or urban life. Meet at Sharpham Car Park.
