A dancing entertainment at The Ferry Boat Inn

Wednesday evening at the Ferry Boat Inn, Shaldon, is the place to be this week! A colourful spectacle of music and dancing will be offered to residents and holidaymakers by two local sides of Morris Dancers.
The entertainment is provided by Grimspound Border Morris, and the Heather and Gorse Clog Dancers. They begin the evening programme just as the sun sets after 8 pm. Fittingly, this is the site of the oldest working ferry in England having been in operation across the river Teign since the 10th century, and the Grimspound Border Morris dancers make a similar claim to preserve ancient English rituals! Grimspound is an ancient hut circle on a western facing slope on Dartmoor. The atmosphere of the place has inspired this team of morris dancers to try to re-create the way things could have been for the people who lived there in terms of their rituals and their approach to life. The side was formed in 1994 from a group of ex-Cotswold style dancers and a few friends, some of whom were also Rapper Sword dancers. Right from the outset they all set out to dance with vigour and in an uncompromising "border" style that celebrates "maleness" with a balance between the rude (but never totally crude) and the dark side! The style of dancing is a border morris style, although the dancers now use their own unique figures and movements.
Accompanying the men will be the Heather and Gorse Clog dancers who are a ladies only dancing side, with male musicians, from nearby Combeinteignhead. The dancers always perform in their smart traditional kit of blue skirt, white bloomers, white blouse and black waistcoat. The dancers wear black clogs with bells and perform to their own band of drums, melodeons, and accordians who play a large repertoire of toe tapping jigs and polkas. The picture shows the Heather and Gorse dancers at a recent folk festival performance. They perform every Wednesday evening in Summer at local pubs and beauty spots and practise during the Winter months at Combeinteignhead Village Hall. New dancers and musicians are welcomed each year to begin the new practice season in September and details can be found on the dancers' website: http://tinyurl.com/3t4bbdu

It was a great event, lots of good stalls, the band were good and the demonstrations looked good. But I do have a couple of moans which can be easily remedied. Whilst there was lots of lovely grub and lots of places to buy it, there was nowhere to sit and eat it! Get the Town Council to provide some tables and chairs next time, they can go under the bit of awning you weren't using where the big outside fruit & veg stall goes on a Saturday. Putting the Band & Demonstrations inside made the place too cluttered and cramped. Put them outside under cover by the motorbike parking near the Co-op next time, they will attract a bigger crowd, and if it rains people can still stand undercover, if it's nice put some tables & chairs outside there too next year.

This email is for the attention of Eric Pickles.

As a resident in Clyst Heath we have less then 7 days ago handed £40,000 deposit on a new house on the Charles Church estate.

We are now under contract and have to pay a balance of £362,000.00
Today’s meeting to stop the proposed Gypsy site being set up in Newcourt Exeter will have lowered the value of the house we have not even moved into.
We are unable to get out of the contract and if we lose our mortgage we can not complete the sale.
Ashford’s solicitors have advised us we will lose our deposit (£40,000.00) and Charles Church will take legal action against us for the remaining sum (£362,000.00).

As a family that has moved from Australia for a new start in Exeter we are in total disarray.
At the meeting at ECC we could not get into the meeting and had to protest outside.
I am disappointed that you did not talk to us.
I have met numerous First time buyers that have invested in homes on the Rydons who are full of discontent on the matter. A Gypsy site would mean their houses will lose significant value.

If we had been aware of the proposed gypsy site we would not have proceeded with buying this particular house on Charles Church.

What you are doing is criminal I am not happy.

Please could you consider our situation, come to your senses and stop this draft plan.

Regards Paul Gregory

My son was receiving his award, it was a perfect venue, with a great guest speaker and brilliant to see young Exeter Talent. Keep working hard and well done to everyone involved including the organisers of the Event and also the cathedral for allowing the awards to be held in a beautiful setting.
