The burning of overgrown heathland known as swailing has been under way on Dartmoor, and has grown in importance with the demise of grazing animals.
The ancient skill of swailing, which is undertaken by commoners’ associations, clears the ground of dead and overgrown vegetation, which is vital for natural habits on the moor.
