North Devon Council has hit back at the Daily Mirror over claims that it spent £11,000 on celebrity appearances on the renamed Devon Youth Games – now rebranded as the Devon Games to Inspire.
According to thisisnorthdevon the council spent £1,200 on two former X Factor contestants – the rest of the fee was paid from a pool of other money from various sources.
A council spokesman told the site “The games replaced the old Devon Youth Games, which had been running successfully for more than 10 years, but was this year struggling for funding.
“The organisers therefore decided to stage a new event to appeal to a broader audience. This included cultural and musical events, as well as the usual sports competitions, to reflect the links between sport and culture in the run-up to the Olympics.”
