The Grand Western Canal Country Park has secured £240,000 funding to build a new visitor centre in the Canal Basin in Tiverton.
The money has come from the sale of Exeter Airport.
It is planned that the environmentally sustainable building will be a modern, single story, timber clad design featuring a living roof, ground source heat pump and solar panels.
An archaeological survey will be carried out before construction begins to ensure no damage is done to the limekilns below, with the building being designed to sit lightly on the ground with no need for extensive excavations.
It is hoped that centre will be completed by the 40th anniversary of the Coutnry Park in 2011.
