There are fears that Plymouth’s archives are under threat of being dispersed after the National Archives said the pubic records building in Coxside was unsuitable.
If the facilities aren’t improved by 2013, the archives may be removed to the National Records Office at Kew, London.
Dr Tom Greeves of the Dartmoor Scoiety has written to leader of Plymouth City Council, Vivien Pengelly urging action.
A new purpose-built History Centre is not part of the council capital progromme because of the recession.
