In answer to a question from Richard Younger-Ross, MP for Teignbridge, the Leader of the House, Harriet Harman said that she would discuss with her ministers and colleagues the possibility of a debate in Government time on the Fire Services and on fire protection.
Mr Younger-Ross had asked the Leader of the House for a debate following a recent death in Torbay and the rescue of Steve Pettit in Newton Abbot. The first incident had no smoke detection, the second had a smoke detector in place.
Mr Younger-Ross told the Devon Week: “Mr Pettit’s rescue proves that smoke detectors in social housing work and that there is a need for fitting all social housing stock with mains operated smoke detection. I take this as a positive response from the Leader of the House and hope she will be able to secure such a debate.”
