Torquay’s coastal zoo Living Coasts, was voted Best All-Round Seaside Attraction by the readers of Coast magazine. In addition, it was runner-up in the Best Marine Conservation category, which was won by Surfers Against Sewage.
Living Coasts is the first and only coastal zoo in the UK. On the harbourside at Torquay, it has one of the largest netted aviaries in Europe, while underground it features underwater windows for watching seals and penguins. The registered charity is involved in education, research and conservation – all of which gained praise from the judges.
The attraction was up against aquariums, piers and leisure complexes from around the coastline of the UK. Other awards included Best Coastal Restaurant or Café and Best Coastal Path.
Octopus Odyssey, which opens at Easter, will be home to common octopus and lesser octopus – both found around UK shores – as well as white spotted octopus and the extraordinary wonderpus octopus, from South East Asia. The display has a sunken ship theme.
