Paignton Zoo Environmental Park vet nurse Emily Gorman recently gave up her holiday to dash across Europe to help sick animals.
Emily abandoned plans for a leisurely trip home to Scotland in favour of a flying visit to Serbia with the Worldwide Veterinary Service. The charity – which supports animal sanctuaries with free veterinary work, medicines and equipment – is the subject of the Sky One series The World Wild Vet.
She said: “I heard that the WVS was looking for volunteers who had experience of working in a zoo, experience of working with bears and were available immediately and thought – that’s me!”
The team had to leave after two days, but WVS promised to go back to help the sanctuary. “And I still managed a few days’ holiday when I got back!”
