North Devon MP Nick Harvey has launched a Water Bills Survey on his website to gather North Devon residents’ views on the disproportionate water rates paid in the south west.
He told the Devon Week: “It is simply unfair that we in the south west pay much more for water than anywhere else in the country, and this is despite having some of the lowest incomes in England.”
The previous Government commissioned a report on water bills and how inequalities across the UK could be corrected. The recommendations of the report are currently being reviewed by the water regulator OFWAT.
However, Nickbelieves OFWAT should be made aware of local people’s views and take them into consideration before they make their final conclusions.
He said: “I look forward to OFWAT’s final review of the report, but local people should also have their say. I hope local residents will participate in my survey, the findings of which I’ll be presenting to OFWAT.”
Nick is committed to finding a fair and just solution to the high water rates paid in the south west, as seen from the Water Tariffs Bill he presented last January with the support of the other Liberal Democrat south west MPs.
The bill, which called for the equalisation of water rates across the country, was dropped at the end of the last parliament.
