Commenting on figures issued by single parent charity Gingerbread, showing that there is £5.7m in unpaid child support maintenance owed to North Devon’s parents, Nick Harvey MP, said “This sum beggars belief, especially for a rural area such as ours – this is a terrible child welfare failure.
“It clearly shows that the previous administration’s efforts to revamp the Child Support Agency have not delivered.
“The CSA has long been viewed as unfit for purpose after major administrative problems emerged a number of years ago. A staple of my postbag remains parents with seemingly unending CSA payment difficulties.
“Labour instigated the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission which was given responsibility for the child maintenance system and its key task was to get more money to families.
“I agree with Gingerbread that achievable and enforceable debt recovery targets should be set. Such massive backlogs should not be tolerated.”
