A charity lunch, organised by prominent Devon businessman John Casson, took place in aid of South West adoption charity Families for Children on Thursday, November 18. Nearly 70 guests attended the event, sponsored by Brewin Dolphin and Private Cellar, they enjoyed an inspirational talk from guest speaker Falklands war survivor Simon Weston and a memorable lunch created by Gidleigh Park’s double Michelin Star chef, Michael Caines.
An auction took place during the lunch and guests were able to bid for items including lunch with actress Hayley Mills and a Gibson Les Paul Junior guitar (the same model Keith Richards plays). The auction contributed to a total of £10,700 being raised on the day.
Ally Colton, Families for Children fundraising and publicity co-ordinator, told the Devon Week: “We are delighted that John Casson has chosen to support us. All the guests had a fabulous day and we would like to sincerely thank everyone who sponsored and attended this event, especially Simon Weston our brilliant speaker.
“All the money raised will be used to support our adoptive families. Our adopters parent children who have come from abusive backgrounds and together we work to change these children’s lives, giving them the tools to become responsible, loving adults.”
Michael Caines was adopted himself and is a very keen supporter of the charity which is close to his heart. Raising such a healthy sum for the charity completes a winning streak for Michael. Gidleigh Park was recently voted number one in the Sunday Times and Hardens Top 100 British Restaurants, also claiming Best Place to Stay and Best Wine List. The following week they were awarded Most Excellent Restaurant in the Conde Nast Johansens 2011 Annual Awards for Excellence.
