Adrian Sanders, MP for Torbay will be opposing government plans to cull thousands of badgers. The proposed slaughter of badgers is a response to the incidence of Bovine TB in cattle.
Adrian told the Devon Week: “There is no question that something must be done to tackle the issue of Bovine TB in cattle, however, there is not enough evidence to warrant the mass killing of this currently protected species”
“We all wish to tackle the issue of bovine TB, however, the evidence gathered on culling has shown that the likelihood of killing every infected badger is very slim, in fact there is a great chance of causing these badgers to flee for safety and spread the disease further. We therefore need to look into more humane and successful approaches such as vaccination in order to eradicate the disease in this country once and for all.”
Adrian has responded to the public consultation on Bovine Tuberculosis, asking the government to look closer into the use of more humane and effective measure to tackling the disease in cattle. The government will now look through and consider the consultation responses before announcing their proposals to tackle Bovine TB next year.
