World Book Night, which takes place on Saturday, March 5, is an ambitious celebration of adult books and reading and involves an army of passionate readers giving away one million gifted books to members of the public across the UK.
In Kingsbridge local book-giver Kate Edwards will be at the library on Friday, March 4 from 4- 7pm to encourage everyone to enjoy poetry by giving away free copies of Seamus Heaney’s New Selected Poems 166 – 1987.
The book give-aways continue on Saturday, March 5 when Kingsbridge library manager, Wendy Bloomer and Kingsbridge Library Reading Group and Friends Group members, will be promoting the joys of going to bed with a good book by dressing in pyjamas and curlers to hand out copies of The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid at the bandstand outside the library.
On Saturday, March 5 there’s a special screening of the BBC 2’s The Culture Show, which features Devon County Council’s long serving South Hams Mobile Library assistant Gill Boyce. Gill retired in December after spending 25 years as part of Devon County Council’s library service.
Eleven library staff across Devon County Council’s Library Service were among the 20,000 people in the UK chosen to distribute 48 copies of their chosen title during the event.
Other libraries in Devon hosting giveaways include Appledore, Cullompton, Illfracombe, Braunton, Ottery St Mary and Stoke Flemming
One of Devon County Council’s first community libraries at the Red Lion Pub in Dittisham, will also be taking part. They are hosting an evening of storytelling with local storyteller Clive Pig and will be giving away copies of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas.
Books will also be distributed in places that might otherwise be difficult to reach, such as prisons and hospitals.
As well handing out books, Devon’s Libraries will also be helping World Book Night by providing locations for distributors to collect their books before the event. Some 164 people in Devon will be collecting their 48 books from libraries, totalling 7,872 books!
