The government is bringing in the changes housing benefit from Friday, April 1, to reduce the amount paid in housing benefits.
The changes will be phased in from the start of April, with some claimants, mostly those making new claims, affected immediately. There will, however, be some transitional protection for certain changes, which a number of existing claimants will be entitled to.
Over 2,000 claimants in Exeter will be affected by these changes, particularly those living in private rented accommodation.
During March, the Exeter City Council will be writing to each one to explain how the changes will impact on them. Those who will be affected significantly will also be contacted personally to ensure that they are clear about the changes and any options they may have to prepare for or mitigate the change.
The Exeter City Council’s website www.exeter.gov.uk has full details of the changes and contact details for information and support.
