RNLI lifeguard has returned to Exmouth and Teignmouth South and will continue through the summer season. Weekend patrols will be provided by RNLI lifeguards at Dawlish Warren, until the peak season begins in July.
Julian Smart, RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor for Teignmouth and Exmouth, said: “Ninety-five per cent of a lifeguard’s role is preventative, and we urge all visitors to visit the beaches and seek out the lifeguards to gain vital local knowledge, including tide times and any potential hazards to avoid.”
RNLI lifeguards will patrol five beaches in East Devon (Sandy Bay, Exmouth, Teignmouth north, Teignmouth South and Dawlish Warren) and a total of 100 in the South West during the summer. Season dates are staggered to take into account the number of beach users.
During 2010, RNLI lifeguards dealt with 521 incidents and assisted 483 people on the five beaches around Teignmouth and Exmouth.
Barry Heathfield, Divisional Lifeguard manager for East Devon, said: “We are very pleased to have such a high number of lifeguards returning this summer and we are all looking forward to a busy and safe season.”
