North Devon MP, Nick Harvey has spoken out today in the strongest terms against any move towards local or regional pay.
Speaking at Liberal Democrat party conference in Brighton, Nick Harvey warned that any move towards local pay could set the public sector back 40 years and would be a barrier to recruitment and retention of staff.
This is especially so in the South West where average salaries are below the national average.
“North Devon is already one of the lowest wage areas in the country,” Harvey argued, “and any move towards regional pay would seriously disadvantage local families and act as a severe barrier to recruiting vital employees to our area.”
He continued: “In the South West we are already seeing moves to regionalise pay and conditions and unions representing NHS workers are speaking out – why should nurses be getting paid less to work here than elsewhere?
“It is simply not fair and in the long-term simply does not stack up.”
The motion was overwhelmingly passed with support from Lib Dem campaigners, MPs and councillors from across the country
