John Lewis has announced that its new shop in Exeter will feature a variety of technological innovations. Designed to give customers a seamless shopping experience and build on Partners (staff) expertise, John Lewis Exeter will be the most advanced omni-channel shop within the retailer’s estate.
John Lewis Exeter will be the first of the retailer’s shops to house a Samsung SUR40 Table and indeed the first retailer in Exeter to offer this service to shoppers. Located in the Electrical department, the 40inch touch screen table will focus on the Samsung assortment and allow customers to view multiple products at one time, on one screen, and easily compare their key features.
Post opening, as the technology offer evolves, the table’s built-in object recognition function means that it will be able to recognise particular products, such as laptops, through special replica blocks when placed on the surface of the table. Customers will then be able to save the product information to their smartphones, via a QR code, and revisit the details quickly and easily, wherever they are.
Matt Leeser, head of buying, communication technology, John Lewis said: “We are thrilled to bring the Samsung Table to shoppers in Exeter for the very first time. It helps contribute to our future vision of incorporating interactive technology within the John Lewis shop network but importantly, we hope it will be a fun experience for customers; allowing them to try out a completely new way of shopping and create a sense of in-store theatre.”
In another first for John Lewis, specially designed interactive information screens will take customers through a number of questions to help find the best product to match their needs.
The eight tablet-sized information points will be based in several departments and focus on products that often require research before purchasing, such as large electrical items and children’s car seats. The tablets will also offer QR codes that customers can scan with their mobile phones to go through to the relevant product page on johnlewis.com.
To ensure customers can navigate the shop quickly and easily, John Lewis Exeter will be the first of the retailer’s shops to offer digital store guides. Situated on the ground and fourth floors, customers will be able to search by product, brand or department to be directed to the relevant floor.
And in another first, while relaxing in the Place to Eat, shoppers will be able to use one of four iPads at the designated ‘iPad Bar’.
Larger screens fitted on walls throughout the shop will also provide customers with information on products available not only in the shop but from the entire John Lewis assortment. Customers will then either be able to buy in-store or order online for next day collection at the shop via the retailer’s Click and Collect service.
Customers will also have access to almost 30 Enhanced Kiosks, the same amount that shoppers would expect to find in a John Lewis full-line department store. Based in a number of areas, including home and nursery, interactive touch screens will allow shoppers to search the entire John Lewis assortment for particular products as well as touch and feel samples of the material they are available in.
