Mention the words ‘kitchen design’ to most people and they start thinking from the dishwasher out. But how about taking the mattress as a starting point?
Then add speakers, and maybe change the tap colours, too. And while we’re on the subject of colours, consider blue, royal blue.
To level-up their thinking in kitchen design, the people at Ikea took at step back and looked a little lower – to kids, in fact.
It turned out the kids had ideas the Ikea people couldn’t dream about. And these ideas included mattresses, speakers, plenty of colour and loads of cupboards. All their efforts were to make the kitchen the funnest, most happening room in the house. And why not? We spend enough time trying to add a bit of zest to our cooking, maybe what we’re missing is the zest in our kitchen.
Here’s Ikea’s thinking: ‘With so much time spent cooking every day, why not use it for being together? Because if you think about it from a kid’s perspective, the kitchen could actually be the funnest room of all.
‘Ikea believes that children are the most important people in the world, and that there is a lot to learn by listening to them. So we think it’s time to let kids into the kitchen. Letting them in for real. It’s time for cooking with parents.’
