Coastal Recycling has awarded seven community grants, totalling £55,650, to organisations across Devon who aim to enhance community spaces, improve biodiversity, cultural facilities and places for outdoor recreation.
The grant funding, administered by national charity GrantScape, will support a variety of projects, including improving access at Exeter’s brain charity Headway, a brand new clubhouse facility for Bideford BMX and renewable energy heating for Topsham Community Pool.
Grants are being made to the following organisations:
- The Parochial Church Council of St James Ashreigney: replacing their cracked treble bell
- The Friends of Berry Castle: Conservation through engagement with local people and historical interpretation boards
- Headway Devon: Improving access and facilities at the XCentre
- Parklife Heavitree: Maintaining and improving a community-run coffee van for Heavitree Pleasure Ground
- Bideford BMX Club: Bideford BMX Clubhouse upgrade
- Topsham Swimming Pool Association: Provision of renewable energy heating at Topsham Community Swimming Pool
All of the groups are delighted with their awards. Rob Flavell from Bideford BMX said: “We’re over the moon regarding Coastal Recycling’s decision to back us again. Big thanks to Coastal Recycling and GrantScape. The grant for our clubhouse project will enable Bideford BMX to continue engaging our community in grass roots BMX racing.”
Headway Devon’s chief executive, Anne Mattock, said “We are hugely grateful to the Coastal Recycling Community Fund for deciding to make such a generous grant to enable us to install new electric doors at our busy centre, the XCentre in Exeter.
“This improvement to our building will make a huge difference to the many people with physical disabilities who access our services on a weekly basis enabling them to visit the centre more independently, as well as improving access for the general public who come to visit our stunning historic building.
“We, and the people that we support, are very excited about getting started on the work and making sure that even more local people can access our services and make use of our beautiful building.”

Each year, the Coastal Recycling Community Fund has approximately £300,000 available each year, possible through the Landfill Communities Fund. Grants are usually available for amounts between £5,000 and £25,000 and are awarded via four annual funding rounds. More than £3.8m has been awarded through the fund to date, securing hundreds of community projects for the county.
