Former CID detective with the Avon and Somerset Constabulary and North Devon resident James D Mortain has launched the audiobook version of his new novel Dead Ringer, which was released back in March, before lockdown.
New series
Dead Ringer heralds the start of a new series of books set on the streets of Bristol, featuring old-school maverick cop, DI Robbie Chilcott, on the hunt for a cold-blooded and methodical serial killer.
Top 50
Soon after its release, the Dead Ringer audiobook flew into the UK top 50 Police Procedural bestsellers chart on Amazon. A delighted James said, “I had to take a screenshot of the chart position as these highs don’t tend to stick around for long! It’s a great start for the main character Chilcott and I hope many other people will get to hear the fabulous job narrator William Merryn Hill has made with the characterisations. I absolutely love what William has done with Chilcott who comes across exactly as I imagined when I was writing the story.”

Chance meeting
James turned his hand to writing crime fiction following a chance meeting with ex-SAS veteran and international best-selling author, Chris Ryan in 2012. He had never considered writing until this point, but set about his first best selling page-turner the very next day.

TWO DEAD. NO WITNESSES. ONE HOPE…
When the discarded body of a young woman sparks a manhunt on the streets of Bristol, striking similarities to another murder suggest there’s only one detective for the job. But he’s in disgrace and self-imposed exile.
Bitter from a promotional snub and professionally embarrassed by his last failed murder case, DI Robbie Chilcott lives a life of seclusion. But now he has a chance to restore some pride and put a deadly serial killer behind bars.
Back where he belongs, it doesn’t take Chilcott long to establish a shocking link between the victims: both were daughters of SAS veterans. As the investigation deepens, so the realisation dawns that he is pursuing a methodical, calculating and ruthless adversary.
He’s a hunting a professional, accomplished in the dark art of death and trained to the highest military levels of escape, evasion and survival. If Chilcott is to gain an advantage and end the bloodshed, he must break from the shackles of law and place his trust in one of the most secretive and tight-knit military units. But will they turn on one of their own?
