Signs of summer | 5 stories from Devon this week
1.
Fresh Teignmouth greeting
The letters spelling Teignmouth as you enter the town on the coastal rail route have been given a facelift. A sure sign that you’ve hit the seaside, the ‘Teignmouth’ letters were painted by volunteers in a sunny gesture that heralds summer. Situated at Sprey Point alongside the main Paddington to Penzance line, the Toblerone-shaped triangular prism was looking tatty til volunteers spruced it up, says the PRSD.
2.
Cinemas returning
There’s talk that the Exeter Phoenix indie cinema, Studio 74, will be opening its doors in May. Meanwhile, in Plymouth, Plymouth Arts Cinema has announced a reopening on Friday, June 4. An event which will be followed by the summer event of Open Air Cinema in the city.
3.
Concerts are back
Postponed from last year, the Amadeus Orchestra will return to Exeter Cathedral for their annual summer concert. The orchestra will perform a swashbuckling selection of pieces: Music from Pirates of the Caribbean, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances and Lutoslawski’s Variations on a Theme of Paganini.
4.
Inclusive amble
Animate Theatre put inclusivity at the heart of what they do. Their latest adventure is Amble with Animate, an accessible exploration around Plymouth. The inspiration for it came from the anxiety of going outside, artistic director Ruby Woods told the PRSD.
5.
Football, society and community
‘Football belongs to the fans and they should have more say in the way things operate,’ says Ryan Hall as he describes the threat to grassroots teams from Covid and the threat of the European Super League.
